Beard Award eludes S.A. chef for 4th time
San Antonio chef Steve McHugh of the Pearl restaurant Cured missed out on his fourth chance at a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest when the awards were presented in Chicago Monday night.
McHugh, who’s been a finalist for the prestigious cooking award four years in a row, lost to Arizona chef Charleen Badman of FnB in Scottsdale.
“San Antonio has risen and will continue to do so,” McHugh said. “Super proud of our team and city and was happy to be up here representing.”
McHugh’s nomination was this year’s only Beard presence for San Antonio. Austin was well represented, with three Southwest finalists: Kevin Fink of Emmer & Rye, Michael Fojtasek of Olamaie and Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine.
San Antonio has come close to a Beard Award several times in the past. Finalists have included Bruce Auden of Biga on the Banks, Andrew Weissman of Le Rêve and Il Sogno Osteria fame and cookbook writers Melissa Guerra and Terry Thompson-Anderson.
