NYC mayor rips possible Homeland Security shutdown

February 23, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is blasting the possibility that Congress might shut down the Department of Homeland Security.

The Republican-controlled Congress has threatened to stop funding to the department as part of a broader fight over President Barack Obama’s immigration policies.

De Blasio, a Democrat, said Monday that such an action could “undermine the defense of this nation.”

De Blasio frequently notes that New York City is likely the number one terrorist target in the United States.

He said he was “very concerned” that funding could be allowed to run out on Friday.

While he said the police department could safeguard the city in the short term, a long shutdown could compromise New York’s security.
