Dokken: MGM’s plaza concerts reopen

May 1, 2019

MGM Springfield, the 2018 casino addition to the region, adds to its modest entertainment options in the warm-weather months with its outdoor concerts on the plaza behind the armory building. Some of the Thursday-Saturday concerts are free and some are ticketed, including the opener with metal band Dokken on Saturday, May 11.

Fronted by Don Dokken and backed on drums by Mick Brown over the years since 1979, Dokken charted singles “Alone Again,” “In My Dreams” and “Burning Like a Flame” and have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. Also performing this night will be Last in Line, a heavy metal group formed by former members of Dio.

MGM, locked in a duel for dollars with Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun for the hearts and wallets of the region’s entertainment/gaming consumers, will look to inspire day trippers (or overnights) to plaza concerts through Sept. 5, with names such as LoCash, Matt + Kim, Collective Soul & Gin Blossoms, Hanson and Warrant. Next up, however, on May 24 is a freebie with local group Trailer Trash.

The season will end Sept. 13 with a ticket concert featuring Crash Test Dummies, Spin Doctors and The Verve Pipe.
