Akron 80, Toledo 75
AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ Jimmal Ball scored 27 points as Akron upset Toledo 80-75 Wednesday night in the Mid-American Conference, snapping the Rockets’ eight-game winning streak.
The Zips (3-7, 1-1) were coming off a 33-point loss to Miami of Ohio in their season opener and had lost 19 straight MAC games. They also had trouble matching up against Casey Shaw, Toledo’s 6-foot-10 center.
But the Zips shot 55.6 percent, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and used a swarming defense to maintain a slim lead through most of the game. The Rockets never had the lead.
Chris Hahn’s jumper put the Zips ahead 33-20 with 6:50 left in the first half. Then the Rockets had their most impressive run, outscoring Akron 15-2 to make it 35-35 on a Shaw free throw with 1:10 left. Hahn’s layup with 51 seconds on the clock gave Akron a 37-35 lead at halftime.
The Zips scored the first six points of the second half and enjoyed their biggest margin of the half, 53-41, when Scott Gooden, who had 14 points, hit a jump shot with 14:02 left.
Toledo, 8-2 and 1-1 in the MAC, slowly whittled away at the Zips and still had a chance when Chad Kamstra made a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to cut Akron’s lead to 78-75.
But Ball, who scored 15 of his points in the second half, was fouled and made two free throws to secure Akron’s win.
Shaw and Kamstra each scored 15 points for Toledo, and Shaw added 12 rebounds.
