Man shot in Hondo during struggle with Medina County deputy

August 24, 2018

A man running from Medina County authorities was shot in the abdomen Wednesday night while struggling with a deputy in Hondo.

Roy Guzman Jr., 42, is facing charges for aggravated assault of a public servant and other charges, the Medina County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Medina deputies and the Hondo Police Department were attempting to serve search and felony arrest warrants at about 8 p.m. in the 1800 block of 16th Street in Hondo.

A deputy found the suspect, identified as Guzman, while he was driving and tried to pull him over.

That’s when a short pursuit began and Guzman rammed the deputy’s vehicle with his own, authorities said.

Guzman then drove to a home near 16th and Avenue F, deputies said. Once there, he ditched his vehicle and started running with officers still in pursuit, authorities said.

A deputy caught up to him and the two started fighting, investigators said.

During their struggle, the deputy fired a round from his service weapon, striking Guzman in the abdomen, the release states.

Guzman was airlifted to University Hospital where he is in stable condition as of Thursday, deputies said.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
