County Officials Stymied By 5-Way Election Tie
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) _ It’s still neck and neck - and neck and neck and neck - in what was a four- way tie for one seat on the newly created Franklin County Charter Commission.
Now there’s a fifth person in the tie for the District 3 seat. Each got one write-in vote on the Nov. 6 ballot, which listed no candidate for the post.
The ballot boxes, which had been sealed since the election, were opened Tuesday by county officials hoping to resolve the tie. Instead they turned up the fifth write-in.
″We’ve never had this happen before,″ said Gladys Hanley, chairwoman of the county Board of Registrars. ″We don’t know what to do.″
The board plans to ask state election officials what to do.
To further complicate things, one of the candidates already has been elected to the Charter Commission as an at-large delegate and another is tied with two other candidates for another at-large seat.
