Orangemen falls just short of upset of Seward

Beatrice let a second half lead slip away from them Friday night against Class B No. 7 ranked Seward.

The Orangemen led early and led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter. Seward held Beatrice to just two points in the fourth quarter. They grabbed their first lead with 3:31 left in the fourth quarter and never relinquished it on their way to the 42-34 win.

Beatrice jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a free throw by Jace Pethoud and two free throws from Andrew Mahoney after an early technical foul on Seward.

Seward answered with a basket, but a basket by Elliott Jurgens and another basket by Mahoney gave Beatrice a 7-2 lead.

Seward came back with a three pointer, but Bennett Crandall’s putback basket made it 9-5. Crandall then scored on a fast break layup after a basket by Seward, making it 11-7 after the first quarter.

Seward scored the first four points of the second quarter to tie the game. Jurgens gave Beatrice the lead back with a fast break layup to make it 13-11.

With the score 13-12, a jumper by Jurgens and a three pointer by Devin Smith extended the Beatrice lead to 18-12.

Seward scored the next five points, but Mahoney ended the second quarter with two free throws to make it 20-17 at half time.

Peyton Murphy knocked down two three pointers to open the third quarter with two three pointers and Crandall followed it up with a free throw to extend the Orangemen lead to 27-17.

The Blue Jays scored four straight points, but Jace Pethoud came back with a basket to make it 29-21.

After two free throws by Seward, Murphy hit another three pointer to extend the Orangemen lead to 32-24. Seward finished the third quarter with two free throws to make it 32-26 entering the fourth quarter.

Seward’s 1-3-1 defense started to cause problems for the Orangemen in the fourth quarter. The Blue Jays scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and took their first lead of the game with 3:31 left.

Two free throws by Jurgens tied the score at 34-34, but that would be the only points of the fourth quarter for the Orangemen. Seward finished the game on a 7-0 run to win 42-34.

Murphy led the way for Beatrice with nine points while Jurgens had eight, Mahoney had six, Crandall had five and Pethoud and Smith had three each.

Beatrice falls to 4-6 on the season and will be in action again next Friday when they host Aurora.

The Orangemen traveled to York on Thursday night and fell 60-42.

Beatrice trailed 28-12 at half time and battled back to make it 45-33 in the third quarter, but York was too much for the Orangemen in the fourth quarter.

Bennett Crandall had 10 points for Beatrice while Andrew Mahoney and Jace Pethoud had nine each, Peyton Murphy had six, Elliott Jurgens had four and Bladen Bayless and Devin Smith had two each.

Beatrice will be in action again next Friday when they host Aurora.
