Ex-Mississippi officer indicted on fondling charge
SENATOBIA, Miss. (AP) — A former police officer in Mississippi accused of inappropriately touching children has been indicted on fondling charges.
Tate County sheriff’s deputies say former Senatobia officer Arthur Avant remains jailed Tuesday. It’s unclear if bail has been set or if he has a lawyer.
An indictment returned last month says Avant fondled a child younger than 16 sometime in 2009.
WREG-TV reports Avant surrendered to authorities Friday night. A letter by a self-described “concerned parent” to Senatobia aldermen accused Avant of inappropriate contact with underage girls.
He’s accused of using his position as a drug education officer to gain trust. Avant was fired by the police department and hired by the Tunica County sheriff’s office weeks later. Tunica County officials didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
