HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) _ Andre Turner’s layup basket with 23 seconds remaining let No. 3 Memphis State rally from a late five-point deficit Monday night and escape Southern Mississippi 68-64 in a Metro Conference basketball game, stretching the Tigers’ unbeaten string to 18 games.

Vincent Askew tipped away an inbounds pass and the ball was fed to Turner, who scored a basket to break a 64-64 tie. Baskerville Holmes added two insurance free throws with four seconds to play.

Behind Derrek Hamilton, Southern Mississippi took a 64-59 lead with 2:15 to play, but Memphis State got three late points from William Bedford and a couple of steals to rally.

Neither team led by more than six points and Southern had a chance to pull into a six-point lead with a 1:43 to play. But Hamilton missed the first shot on one-and-one free throw and Holmes got an inside basket to cut the lead to 64-62 with 1:23 to play.

Beford’s turnaround basket with 35 seconds to play forged the 64-all tie.

Bedford led Memphis State with 24 points, and Holmes added 17.
