WASHINGTON (AP) _ Mike Pegues scored 16 points and Darryl Presley hit a key slam down the stretch, lifting Delaware to a 77-73 victory in the opening round of the Red Auerbach Colonial Classic Friday night.
Delaware will play Howard or host George Washington in Saturday’s championship game.
The season-opener for both teams saw 10 lead changes and three ties in the second half before Presley dunked off a feed from Pegues to put the Blue Hens up, 72-70, with 1:26 left. Siena’s Jim Cantamessa missed close-range shots on consecutive possessions before Pegues scored to put Delware ahead by four with 15 seconds remaining.
Cantamessa followed with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one, but Pegues hit 3 of 4 foul shots to seal the victory.
Pegues, a sophomore, also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. Presley, a sophomore transfer from Virginia, scored 15 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Pegues and Presley helped Delaware withstand a career-high 24-points by Siena sophomore Marcus Faison, who was held to three points in the second half.
