2 Die as Bomb Explodes in Algiers

February 20, 1998

ALGIERS, Algiers (AP) _ A bomb exploded today in a market in the suburbs of the Algerian capital, killing two people and injuring 32 others, authorities said.

It was the third explosion in the capital in less than 24 hours. Two explosions Thursday left two dead and 12 others wounded.

No one claimed responsibility for the attacks, which are usually blamed on the Armed Islamic Group, the most radical Muslim organization that is seeking to overthrow the military-backed government.

The Algerian government says 26,500 people have been killed and 21,000 injured since 1992, when the military canceled parliamentary elections that the now banned Islamic Salvation Front was poised to win, triggering the insurgency.

Independent estimates have put the death toll from fighting at more than 75,000.
