Charges dismissed in June death of Mississippi ‘Peanut Man’
YAZOO CITY, Miss. (AP) — Murder charges have been dismissed against a man and woman in the beating death of a central Mississippi man.
WLBT-TV reports Atoya Savell and Victor Ross Manor were released from the Yazoo County jail Tuesday.
Yazoo City police had arrested them in August, saying that they had killed 67-year-old Billy Ray Peeples in June.
Police say they dismissed the charges because witnesses stopped cooperating, harming chances for a prosecution to go forward.
Peeples, known as the “Peanut Man” for his history of selling boiled peanuts, was found unconscious in a pool of blood inside a storage building on June 11. He had been missing for several days. Peeples died eight days later at a Jackson hospital, never regaining consciousness.
Stacey Jones, Peeples’ niece, calls the development “hurtful.”
