Valparaiso 44, Butler 42

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Valparaiso overcame 253 rushing yards and four touchdowns by Butler’s Arnold Mickens Saturday to beat the Bulldogs 44-42, as Cameron Hatten kicked a 27-yard field goal on the game’s final play.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, Nick Browder hit Michael Tolbert for a 28-yard TD pass with 5:22 to play to bring Valparaiso to within a point.

Hatten’s extra-point attempt would have tied the game, but he missed.

Browder completed 13-of-23 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns for the Crusaders (3-2, 1-1). He threw first-half scoring passes to Scott Hinrichs from 13 yards and Darryl Jackson from 5 yards out.

Mickens carried 41 times and scored on runs of 8, 27, 10 and 3 yards for Butler (1-5, 0-2). Toby Jacobs completed 15-of-27 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns.

Valparaiso led 35-21 in the third quarter before Mickens scored three straight touchdowns to give the Bulldogs a 42-35 lead with 8:40 to play.

In the game, the teams combined for 939 total yards with Butler outgaining the Crusaders 500-439.
