Police: Woman’s tale about being given baby was custody ploy

November 20, 2018

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Police in South Carolina say a woman lied when she told authorities an unknown woman handed her a newborn and fled.

The State reports Greenville police announced Monday that 34-year-old Monique Yolanda Jackson, of Florida, has been arrested and charged with filing a false police report. Police issued a call for information on the baby’s mother last week, saying Jackson was a “Good Samaritan” who was randomly handed a baby.

A Monday police statement titled “Not So ‘Good Samaritan’ ” says Jackson’s story was a ploy to assume custody of the baby. Jackson told police an unknown woman said she couldn’t care for the baby and handed the child over earlier this month. Police say the mother has since been identified and is being investigated by the county sheriff’s office.
