Fantastic Fellow Wins Oak Tree
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Fantastic Fellow, who has raced mostly in Europe, edged Magellan by a head Saturday in the $275,000 Oak Tree Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park.
Fantastic Fellow, a 3-year-old colt ridden by Alex Solis, won for the fifth time 11, covering the turf course in 1:36 1-5. He paid $10.20, $5.20 and $4.40, and earned $165,000 to increase his career total to $388,120.
Magellan, with Corey Black, finished second, a neck in front of favorite Taiki Blizzard, in a field of eight in the Grade III race for 3-year-olds and up. Black rode blocked through much of the stretch.
``I committed too soon,″ Black said. ``I was trying to make something happen that wasn’t there. I didn’t wait long enough.″
Magellan returned $6.40 and $4.40. Taiki Blizzard, under high weight of 123 pounds, paid $3.80 to show.
In the $200,000 Oak Leaf Stakes for juvenile fillies, Vivid Angel beat favored stablemate Eastside Westside. Both are trained by Kentucky Derby-winner Bob Baffert.
Vivid Angel was ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye. She finished 3 1/2 lengths in front of Love Lock, with David Flores. Another 3 lengths back was Balisian Beauty and Corey Nakatani in a field of nine in the Grade I race for 2-year-olds. Vivid Angel covered a mile over a fast track in 1:37 1-5.
Vivid Angel, earned $120,000, winning her third in four starts. Her total earnings are at $342,200. She paid $10.20, $4.60 and $3.60. Love Lock returned $4.40 and $3.80, while Balisian Beauty paid $4.80 to show.
