Giants’ Garnes Sprains Right Ankle
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ New York Giants safety Sam Garnes sprained his right ankle during a short-yardage drill Wednesday afternoon, the first significant injury for the NFC champions in this year’s training camp.
Garnes was on the ground for several minutes after center Dusty Zeigler rolled into him on the first play of the second series for the starters.
Russell Warren, the team’s orthopedic surgeon, examined Garnes before the player was taken to the locker room on a golf cart.
``I’m keeping my fingers crossed,″ coach Jim Fassel said. ``I don’t think it’s anything major.″
With Garnes out, Shaun Williams moved from free safety to strong safety and Omar Stoutmire took over at free safety.
