Shepherd Ponytails overpower Dayton 5-0

July 15, 2018

The Shepherd Ponytails All-Stars softball team earned another victory at the end of the July 14 state tournament over the Dayton Ponytails, 5-0.

The Shepherd Ponytails slowly but surely worked their way up to scoring runs with a slight 4-0 lead over the Dayton Ponytails at the top of the third inning.

The Dayton team fought hard to get on the board and eventually held off Shepherd Ponytails after they scored a fifth run, but their opponents were equally diligent and kept the Dayton Ponytails from getting a run on the board. The game ended with the Shepherd Ponytails winning in five innings 5-0.

Coach Chris Chamblee of the Shepherd Ponytails

“We had excellent pitching,” he said. “We all played as a team.”

This is the second victory comes after the Shepherd Ponytails defeated the Hopkins County Ponytails earlier that day.

“We hit the ball well,” said Chamblee.

The Ponytails state tournament continues on Sunday July 15. Two more games will be played for the Shepherd Ponytails before moving onto the fifth and final game for the championship on Monday July 16. According to Chamblee, a championship victory means the Shepherd Ponytails will be making history.

“It’ll probably be the first one for the Ponytails in Shepherd,” he said.

Coach Victor Best of the Dayton Ponytails says despite the outcome it cannot be denied that both teams brought skill to the table.

“Two good teams walked on the field. Two good teams walked off the field,” he said.

Best believes the main factor that kept the Dayton Ponytails from winning is errors. He says the team will continue to stay the course through the duration of the tournament.

“We’re just going to keep doing what we do,” said Best.

Regardless of the outcome of the tournament for the Dayton Ponytails, Best wishes the other teams well.

“It was a good game,” said Best. “Best of luck to everybody.”
