Driver, children escape motor home fire on I-25
The driver of an old motor home narrowly escaped with his two young children after the vehicle burst into flames on Interstate 25 south of Santa Fe, a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office report says.
The white and gray 1990 Fleetwood was reported smoking by the side of southbound I-25 south of N.M. 599 at about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.
By the time sheriff’s deputies arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames, the report said.
The driver, Henry Meadows, 41, and his daughter and son, were found inside the vehicle of a nearby good Samaritan, according to the report.
Meadows told investigators the motor home began to smoke as he was driving and the engine lost power as he pulled to the shoulder of the highway. Meadows told deputies he tried to extinguish the flames, then retreated and pulled his children from the vehicle.
The motor home was listed as a complete loss. Meadows said it belonged to a friend and they had been living in it at various RV parks around Santa Fe, the report says.
Deputies then learned Meadows had an outstanding warrant out of Tucumcari for failing to pay fines on a marijuana possession charge and arrested him, the report said. The report said Meadows’ wife arrived and took the children.
