Chilean party leader kills policeman in traffic accident
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — The leader of one of Chile’s major political parties has struck and killed a policeman in a traffic accident.
Police say the officer had stopped a suspected drunk truck driver when the car of Sen. Jaime Quintana hit him shortly before midnight Saturday in southern Chile, near the town of Temuco. Prosecutor Jaime Pino says the officer wasn’t wearing a reflective vest and local media say he apparently entered the lane used by Quintana due to a scuffle with the truck driver.
Quintana tested negative for alcohol, but was detained and released pending possible charges.
The senator told local journalists he was “devastated” and expressed pain for what happened to the officer.
