#Giving Tuesday: Everyone can help

November 25, 2018

FLORENCE, S.C. – From cash prizes for donation to photo booths, ice cream and coffee, this year’s #GivingTuesday Pee Dee will offer a bit of something for everyone.

This year, the Eastern Carolina Community Foundation is hosting the #GivingTuesday Pee Dee Donation Station and Open House from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Waters Building at 135 S. Dargan St. in downtown Florence.

“People are the soul of the community ,” said Sarah Shelley, executive director of the foundation . “It is important people understand all the working parts of their community, and nonprofits make up so much of what we do not see on the street, in the mall, at church.”

Nonprofits often work behind the scenes as well as publicly, Shelley said.

“So many of the nonprofits we’re involved with at the Community Foundation are involved in both the community aspect as well as very behind the scenes in a niche aspect,” Shelley said.

The event will not only raise money for organizations but give those groups a chance to get the word out about what they need in the way of donations and for people to meet the board members and workers behind the organizations.

“This is also a great opportunity for the Pee Dee to understand here are the people who help provide the services that improve our quality of life for all of our citizens,” Shelley said.

Supporting the community’s nonprofits is just part of being a “responsible citizen,” Shelley said.

“Everybody who walks through the door Tuesday will get a chance to participate in one way or another,” she said.

The 50th, 100th, 150th and 200th guests to walk through the doors of this year’s event will each receive $50 to donate to the charity of their choice, Shelley said.

There will also be a #GivingTuesday Scavenger Hunt. Participants who visit the booths of each of the 50 participants can earn $150 that they can donate to their favorite charity. Those who visit each of the booths on the upper gallery of the building could earn $100 for their favorite charity. Those who visit all the booths on the main floor could earn up to $50 for their favorite charity. The names of those who complete scavenger hunt challenges will be placed into a drawing to determine the three winners.

First Reliance Bank’s Cash Machine will be on hand. Participants can spend 10 seconds and, in that time, grab cash for their favorite charity.

An UNSelfie booth also will be set up with props. Participants can use props to enhance their photo.

“UNSelfies top selfies any day, and last year at the #GivingTuesday Pee Dee Station, they were a big hit,” Shelley said.
