New Accident in Baku Metro
BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) _ Sparks flew and smoke filled a car on the Baku subway today after some brake pads overheated, but no injuries were reported. The scare came just five days after an underground fire killed about 300 people.
Passengers were quickly evacuated, the ITAR-Tass and Interfax news agencies reported. A station was closed briefly and the train sent to a depot for inspection.
The brake pads in one of the train cars overheated, filling the car with smoke, a subway official told ITAR-Tass. Officials initially blamed the problem on a blown fuse.
About 300 people died and some 200 others were injured in a fire that broke out on a train between two stations Saturday. Many of the victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
