Patriarch of Family Whose Holdings Include Hyatt Chain
CHICAGO (AP) _ Philanthropist A.N. Pritzker, patriarch of the family whose worldwide holdings include the Hyatt Hotel chain, was in stable condition Thursday after recent intestinal surgery, his secretary said.
Pritzker, 90, underwent surgery about two weeks ago because of an infection detected after an attack of abdominal pain Jan. 3, said secretary Christine Vallos.
He has had diverticulosis for many years, she said.
No information about his condition was being released, said Holly Rea, a spokeswoman for Michael Reese Hospital. Pritzker’s internist, Edward Newman, also declined coment.
The Pritzker family donated $4.5 million to charity last year.
The son of a Russian immigrant, he gave up personal handling of the family’s 140 Hyatt hotels five years ago and says he got involved in charity activities because ″I don’t like to sit around on my can.″
Pritzker also has ″adopted″ a local elementary school, sponsoring an after-school program involving 500 youngsters and occasionally taking small groups on trips in his private jet.
