Lapentti Upset In Dubai Open
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) _ Third-seeded Nicolas Lapentti was upset by 19-year-old Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 6-4, 6-3 Thursday in the second round of the Dubai Open.
Defending champion Jerome Golmard of France struggled to beat Andrei Pavel of Romania 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the $1 million tournament.
Top seed Nicolas Kiefer of Germany also needed three sets before winning, 6-3, 7-5, 6-0 over Spain’s Alberto Martin, setting up a rematch Golmard. The two met in the final last year.
Among the other seeded players winning were: No. 4 Albert Costa of Spain, 6-0, 6-4 over Stefan Koubek of Austria, and No. 5 Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco, 6-4, 6-2 over Spain’s Galo Blanco.
