Arkansas authorities investigating inmate’s death
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 38-year-old inmate at an east Arkansas prison over the weekend.
The state Department of Correction said Jamaal Simpson was found unresponsive at his one-inmate cell Sunday with a homemade noose around his neck at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys. Responding correctional officers and medical staff performed emergency medical treatment before Simpson was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Simpson’s body will be turned over to the Arkansas State Crime Lab, and State Police are investigating his death. The Department of Correction says it is also conducting an internal investigation.
Simpson was serving a 65-year sentence for delivery of methamphetamine or cocaine out of Washington County.
