3 More Arrests in Attack on Vietnamese Student
CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) _ Three more young men were arrested Friday on murder charges in the fatal beating of a Vietnamese college student who objected to slurs about his nationality, police said.
Luyen Phan Nguyen, 19, was beaten and kicked outside a party Saturday night by a mob of 15 frenzied youths, witnesses told police. The University of Miami pre-med student died Monday of a brain hemorrhage caused by a kick that broke his neck, an autopsy determined.
William Madalone Jr., 22; Christopher Madalone, 19; and Derek Kozma, 19, all of Tamarac, were charged with second-degree murder. Five other young men already face the same charge. All eight were held without bond.
Police expect to make at least two more arrests and refer other names to prosecutors for a review of possible charges, said Sgt. Jeff Maslan.
Maslan said early this week the trouble erupted when someone at the party began making racial slurs. Nguyen objected and the dispute escalated, Maslan said.
