‘Steel Magnolias’: Celebrating 30 years of girl power and Louisiana charm

May 7, 2019

“Steel Magnolias,” the funny, heartwarming story of life, love and loss in a small Louisiana parish, returns to the big screen for a 30th anniversary celebration at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday, May 22.

The screening includes special insight from Turner Classic Movies, said the Playhouse, which described the film’s story in a news release. “At the center of the group is Shelby, newly married and joyfully pregnant, even though her diabetes could make childbirth life-threatening. Terrified at the possibility of losing her only daughter, M’Lynn looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fear of death to join Shelby in celebrating the miracle of new life.”

The Playhouse said “Steel Magnolias” is a classic tale of “family, strength in women, and big southern hair...” It features screen icons Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah and Dolly Parton.

The Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 E. Ridge. Wednesday, May 22, 7 p.m. $12.50. 203-438-5795
