Local man opens Aiken’s Barber Shop on Laurens Street
Mark Beachum recently achieved a major personal goal.
He kicked off the new year by opening Aiken’s Barber Shop downtown on Jan. 2.
“I’ve always wanted to own my own business,” he said. “I guess I just wanted to be my own boss. We’ll see how that works out.”
Aiken’s Barber Shop is at 127 Laurens St. N.W.
Operating hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
In general, customers can just drop in, but “if people call me and let me know, I will stay later than 5 p.m.,” Beachum said.
Aiken’s Barber Shop is closed Sunday.
Beachum likes his business’ location, which is next to What’s Cookin’.
“People can go have breakfast and then get a haircut or go have lunch and then get a haircut,” Beachum said. “I’m really getting noticed here. In the first four days, I got nine new customers. That is really good.”
Beachum, 53, has been cutting hair locally for around 18 years.
“I used to be a cosmetologist, and I did women’s hair,” he said. “When I first started off, I would rather have been a barber. But my wife wanted me to do women’s hair so she could get her hair colored and cut for free. That’s why I went to cosmetology school. After she passed away, I went into barbering.”
Beachum was based at City Barber Shop in Aiken for 10 years.
“It was a pleasure working for Chris Sanders there,” he said. “I got to know his family. I had a good time.”
At Aiken’s Barber Shop, Beachum offers clipper cuts and scissor cuts.
“If you want your head shaved, I’ll do that with a razor,” he said. “It’s $10 if you do the shave, and $15 if you get a full haircut. I also do the hot towel and the neck shave. I’ve got a vacuum system here, so when you get your haircut, you don’t get a lot of hair down your shirt.”
Beachum gives first responders a discount.
“Police officers and businessmen are a big part of my business,” he said.
Beachum is in the process of decorating Aiken’s Barber Shop with sports memorabilia.
“I’m starting slowly,” Beachum said. “I pick up pieces from time to time. I’m going to have football, baseball, basketball and golf décor … all the sports.”
He’s also hoping two more hair cutters will join him at Aiken’s Barber Shop in the future.
“I’m working six days a week now because I’m by myself,” Beachum said. “I would like to have a couple of days off. I’m older so I should be working less, but now I’m working more.”
