Victim in fatal Sparks police shooting was Sparks man
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — The man shot and killed by Sparks police over the weekend has been identified as 43-year-old Johnny Bonta of Sparks.
Washoe County sheriff’s deputies handling the investigation of the officer-involved shooting released his name on Tuesday.
The sheriff’s office says Sparks police responded to a disturbance at an apartment building on the edge of Reno at about 4 a.m. Sunday and were able to safely remove a mother and a teenager daughter from the residence.
Investigators say Bonta then exited the front of the apartment with a shotgun. They say he refused repeated commands to put the weapon down and ultimately was shot by three officers.
The officers tried unsuccessfully to revive him and medical responders declared him dead at the scene.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information should call the sheriff’s office (775-328-3320) or Secret Witness (775-322-4900).
