DALLAS (AP) _ Michelle Harris and Darla Simpson sparked a 14-5 run midway through the second half that carried 19th-ranked Houston to a 63-57 victory over Rice in Wednesday's opener of the Southwest Conference women's postseason basketball tournament.

Texas and Baylor played later Wednesday to determine who would play Houston in a 6 p.m. Friday semifinal game.

Guard Cynthia Jackson led all scorers with 16 points as Houston (22-6) beat Rice (13-15) for the 11th consecutive time and 29th time in 31 meetings. Evenda Barnes led the Owls with 12 points and nine rebounds, three assists and four steals.

A jumper by Carol Anne Gilmore pulled the Owls within 41-40 with 12:12 left in the game. Harris, who totaled 13 points, made a follow shot to start the Lady Cougars' run, and she sank a fast-break layup a minute later.

Simpson, who had 12 points, 9 rebounds and six steals, capped the run with two follow shots that put Houston ahead 55-45. During the outburst, Houston made 5 of 8 shots while Rice was shooting 2-for-13.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Lady Cougars, who shot 50 percent in the second half (14-for-28) and 38 percent overall.
