Groundbreaking set for new Goodwill location

Goodwill in Odessa located on East 42nd Street is closing its doors this week to prepare for the groundbreaking of a new retail and Career Center located three miles down the road.

The new location will be at 4212 Preston Smith Road, a news release from the company stated. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 27 at the site of the new location. The anticipated completion date is fall 2019, the release stated.

The final day of operation for the current Odessa location is Nov. 30. The property owners of the current location plan to revitalize the area. Current employees have been offered a temporary transfer to one of the two Midland locations of Goodwill-West Texas until the new building is completed, the release stated.

The new 13,000 square-foot building will feature retail space and a Career Center, providing free services for career placement in the Permian Basin. Free services will include:

One-on-one career counseling.Resume writing.Job search assistance.Computer access.Google Digital Skills Training.

The Career Center aims to fulfill the Goodwill mission of providing opportunities for those with barriers to employment in the Permian Basin with a goal to reach 300 people after opening in 2019, the release stated. In combination with their existing Career Centers in Abilene and San Angelo, Goodwill-West Texas (Odessa) has a goal of reaching over 1,000 individuals through job search, training and placement efforts.

Eighty-seven cents of every dollar earned in Goodwill stores directly funds mission programs like the Career Center. Donation pick-ups for Odessa can be scheduled by calling Goodwill-West Texas at 432-689-4000. Donations received in Odessa will continue to benefit the Permian Basin.
