Rio Arriba County jury convicts man of rape

April 2, 2019

A Rio Arriba County jury has convicted Jason Cordova, 33, of raping a 76-year-old neighbor in El Llano.

Cordova in 2016 knocked on his victim’s door asking for a Coke, according to reports at the time, then forced his way into her house and raped her.

In addition to sexually assaulting his victim, Cordova “brutally struck her at least twice in the face, causing facial fractures and eye damage that is likely permanent,” according to a statement issued Monday afternoon by District Attorney Marco Serna’s office.

The victim, now 80, had reconstructive surgery on her face following the attack, suffers from vision and hearing loss and must use a walker due to the attack, according to the statement.

Cordova was convicted Friday of criminal sexual penetration, criminal sexual contact, aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm and tampering with evidence in the case.

He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years and six months in prison at sentencing, which hasn’t yet been scheduled.
