Ready for college: McAllen ISD events aim to transition all students by December

Nearly 1,500 high school seniors from throughout the local school district spent Wednesday morning learning various aspects for their transition to college, from personal finances to guidance to the numerous degrees available in the region.

The McAllen school district held the district-wide event on Wednesday for seniors as the rest of their classmates took the Pre-SAT testing.

Pharr police chief candidates down to four

The city of Pharr announced Wednesday it has narrowed down the search for its next police chief to four candidates.

Among the four candidates are interim Pharr Police Chief Jose Luengo, Kingsville Police Department Bureau Commander Julian Cavazos, Palestine Police Chief Andy Harvey and Mike Holguin, a criminal justice instructor with the Arlington Independent School District.

Border Book Bash a chance for locals to meet their favorite authors

One of Margie Longoria’s favorite authors growing up was Judy Blume. When Longoria — at the age of 35 — finally got the chance to meet Blume, she started crying.

Years later, Longoria still gets emotional when she speaks of the encounter.
