Police Officer’s Nose Bitten Off In Fight

June 11, 1993

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) _ A man bit off the tip of a police officer’s nose Friday when the officer intervened in a domestic dispute.

Officers Jay VanVolkinburg and Donald Barker attempted to arrest Ishka Alpern on charges of assaulting his girlfriend. Police said Alpern gouged Barker’s eyes and tried to grab his revolver, then bit Vanvolkinburg on the arm and nose.

Vanvolkinburg was sent to Tompkins Community Hospital to repair the end of his nose, which was severed during the scuffle, police said. He was in satisfactory condition, said hospital spokeswoman Kelly Willms. She said she could give no other information on his condition.

Between 75 and 100 people gathered and tried to interfere with the arrest, but officers restored order.

Barker was treated and released at a hospital.

Alpern was arraigned on charges of assault, weapons possession and resisting arrest and ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bail. The girlfriend, whose name was not released, was not injured.
