ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) _ Melvin Levett scored 12 points as No. 15 Cincinnati beat Iowa State 60-52 Friday night in a defensive struggle to advance to the championship round of the Great Alaska Shootout.
Ryan Fletcher added 11 for Cincinnati (3-0), which managed to shoot 41 percent from the field. Pete Mickeal pulled in 10 rebounds.
The weak shooting was enough to beat the Cyclones (2-1), who shot just 40 percent. Iowa State’s Martin Rancik led all scorers with 14 points and Marcus Fizer had 13. Fizer also was the game’s top rebounder with 11.
The Cyclones led early but fell apart in the game’s final nine minutes. The teams traded the lead four times in the second half before Cincinnati put the game away for good with eight minutes left.
Fletcher hit a jumper to give the Bearcats a 46-45 lead. Kenyon Martin followed with another jumper and Mickeal hit a free throw and another jumper to widen the lead to 51-45. The Cyclones couldn’t get closer than three points the rest of the way.
The Bearcats started slowly, spotting the Cyclones to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes. But a 12-0 run in the middle of the first half put Cincinnati up 19-11.
Then it was Iowa State’s turn, putting up nine unanswered points, including seven from Klay Edwards.
The half ended with Cincinnati leading 29-28.
