UTEP 22, N. Mexico St. 21
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) _ Mike Perez threw a 39-yard touchdown pass and Texas-El Paso capitalized on a fumble in the second half for a 22-21 victory over New Mexico State Saturday night.
The Miners (2-1) trailed 21-7 in the second quarter and 21-10 at the half, but got back into it after Baron Brown recovered a fumble by New Mexico State quarterback David Chisum at the Aggies 18. Kenny Brown’s 1-yard run brought the Miners back to 21-16.
The next time it got the ball, UTEP drove 80 yards to score, getting the winning touchdown on Perez’s pass to Ansel Littlejohn.
New Mexico State (0-1) went ahead on its first possession of the game, the score coming on Chisum’s 25-yard pass to Mike Beauregard. Perez’s 39-yard touchdown pass to slotback Kevin Caldwell tied it 7-7.
Aggies linebacker Steve Campbell recovered a UTEP fumble at the Miners 13 to give New Mexico State a scoring chance. A 4-yard run by fullback Daryl Donahue moved the Aggies to the 9, and on fourth-and-six Chisum completed a 9- yard pass to Aaron Laing to put the Aggies ahead 14-7.
Chisum’s 9-yard pass to Beauregard capped another long New Mexico State drive and gave the Aggies a 21-7 lead.
