Prep basketball: Irish girls rout Belfry 79-34 in home opener

HUNTINGTON - Huntington St. Joe High School’s girls basketball team made its home debut spectacular.

Paige Shy scored 25 points to lead the Irish (12-1) to a 79-34 rout of Belfry (7-11) Saturday in their first home game of the 2018-2019 season.

Huntington St. Joe led 54-16 at halftime and never was seriously challenged as Dena Jarrells added 15 points and Hannah Roberts 13.

Kenzie Maynard paced the Pirates with 17 points.

HUNTINGTON ST. JOE 26 28 18 15 - 79: Adkins 8, Hickman 9, Whitmore 2, Jarrells 15, Ab. Lee 7, Roberts 13, Shy 25.

ASHLAND 74, MASON COUNTY 43: Julia Prker scored 25 to help the Kittens clobber the Royals. Mikayla Martin scored 11. Rachel Payne and Sam Schumaker led Mason County with 13 points each.

SOUTH POINT 37, WHEELERSBURG 35: LaDiamond Crawley hit a 3-pointer with 1:30 to play to give the Pointers (11-3) a 36-35 lead, their first of the game, in a key road victory. Emilee Carey scored 14 and Emilee Whitt 10. Kaylee Darnell led the Pirates (12-4) with 19 points.

HUNTINGTON HIGH 63, SPRING VALLEY 55: Kris Brown scored 18 as the Highlanders (5-7) went on the road to beat the Timberwolves. Garrick Hopkins and Chianti Littlejohn scored 10 each. C.J. Meredith led Spring Valley with 29 points.

FAIRLAND 43, WEST UNION 29: Fairland outscored West Union 23-11 in the second half in a Saturday battle of Dragons at the Coach Young Classic in Seaman, Ohio. Jacob Polcyn scored 11 and Clayton Thomas 10 to lead Fairland (11-4). Bowan Tomlin led West Union (6-8) with 11 points.

Also in the Coach Young Classic, Chesapeake defeated Peebles 56-42, and Eastern-Pike beat Eastern-Brown 71-63.

Lauren Harmison also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Vivian Ho added 16 points and Kalissa Lacy 13. Sidney Meredith led Spring Valley with 18 points. Caroline Asbury chipped in 13 points and Ella Edwards 11.

IRONTON 73, PORTSMOUTH 56: Ethan Wilson scored 26, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead the Fighting Tigers (10-4 overall, 5-2 Ohio Valley Conference) over the Trojans in Portsmouth, Ohio. Charlie Large scored 12 and Jordan Grizzle 11. Matthew Fraulini led Portsmouth (6-8, 2-4) with 20 points. Danny Lattimore scored 18.

COAL GROVE 46, SOUTH POINT 33: Aaron Music’s 17 points and 14 rebounds paced the Hornets (10-4 overall, 5-2 OVC) to a home victory over the Pointers (6-6, 3-4). Chance Gunther led South Point with 13 points.

GALLIA ACADEMY 68, CHESAPEAKE 57: Cory Call scored 23 and Caleb Henry and Justin McClelland 15 each as the Blue Devils (7-4 total, 5-2 OVC) beat the Panthers in Centenary, Ohio. Eli Archer led Chesapeake (8-5, 2-5) with 19 points. Tylan Hutchison and Austin Jackson each scored 11.

SYMMES VALLEY 64, WESTERN-BROWN 62: The Vikings (312 overall, 3-6 Southern Ohio Conference) rallied from a 23-11 deficit to upset the Indians (11-3, 8-3) in Latham, Ohio. Luke Leith scored 22 to lead Symmes Valley. Jack Leith scored 17 and Drew Scherer 14. Alex Humphrey scored 28 for Western. Maveric Ferneau added 12.

SOUTH GALLIA 63, WAHAMA 40: Nick Hicks scored 24 to help the Rebels (10-4 overall, 6-3 Tri-Valley Conference) beat the White Falcons (2-11, 2-7) in Mercerville, Ohio. Garrett Saunders scored 12 points, C.J. Mayse 11 and Braxton Hardy 10. Abram Pauley scores 12 for Wahama.

ALEXANDER 54, MEIGS 41: The Spartans (11-1 overall, 7-1 TVC) used a 17-0 run to erase a 15-point deficit and defeat the Marauders (7-8, 4-4) in Pomeroy, Ohio. Dylan Mecum led Alexander with 14 points. Caleb Terry chipped in 13. Weston Baer paced Meigs with 21 points.

WHEELERSBURG 47, OAK HILL 37: The home-standing Pirates (13-0 overall, 8-0 Southern Ohio Conference) rallied from a 20-17 halftime deficit to defeat the Oaks (9-4, 6-3). Tanner Holden led Wheelersburg with 19 points. Chase Hammond scored 16 and Mason Darby 15 for Oak Hill.

NITRO 57, WINFIELD 53: Joel Sweat poured in 32 points to help the Wildcats (8-4) beat the Generals (5-7). Nate Vance led Winfield with 14 points. Zach Simpkins added 11.

POCA 62, SISSONVILLE 46: Isaac McKneely scored 26 to lead the Dots (8-4) in the home win. Nolan Luikart scored 13 points. Will Hackney scored 25 for the Indians (3-7). Brody Danberry chipped in 10.
