Classic Cat Wins Coolmore Stakes

April 19, 1998

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) _ Classic Cat came on strong in the stretch to overcome Voyamerican by a head in the $368,225 Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on Sunday, one of the final prep races for the Kentucky Derby.

Classic Cat, ridden by Robby Albarado, stalked Voyamerican, Cowboy Dan and Grand Slam for much of the 1 1-16 miles. The son of Mountain Cat began moving up on the outside at the turn for home while Cowboy Dan and Grand Slam began to fade.

Voyamerican, with Eibar Coa aboard, led on the rail until Classic Cat caught him in the final strides and beat him to the wire while Grand Slam was another four lengths back in third in the eight-horse field.

The winning time over a muddy track was 1:42 4-5.

Classic Cat, owned by Gary M. Garber and trained by David Cross Jr., returned $21, $8.60 and $4.80. Voyamerican paid $5.80 and $3.60 and Grand Slam was worth $3.20.

Classic Cat, winning for the second time in eight starts, earned $228,299 to increase his lifetime winnings to $304,579. It was his first victory in four races this year.

Voyamerican, breaking from the No. 4 post position, went to the lead and was followed on the outside by Cowboy Dan. Both 3-year-old ran nearly side by side, with Voyamerican keeping his head in front, until the far turn.

Grand Slam, ridden by Jerry Bailey, made a brief challenge but Voyamerican maintained the lead until Classic Cat’s strong move to the wire.

One Bold Stroke finished fourth, followed by Keene Dancer, Overreacshawn, Cowboy Dan and Dr. J in the 17th running of the race. Overreactshawn and Dr. J are not Derby eligible.
