Four Dead After Car Plunges Off Deck

September 25, 2000

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) _ A car plunged off the 5th-floor parking deck of an oceanfront motel Sunday, killing four New York women.

The accident occurred during the resort city’s busy Neptune Festival weekend, a post-summer vacation celebration intended mainly for local residents. The car landed on its roof just yards from a carnival set up on the beach for the weekend.

Don Rimer, a Virginia Beach police spokesman, identified the victims as Joan Ellen Walsh, 56, the driver, of New York City; Mary Ann Going, 60, of East Elmhurst, N.Y.; and Kathleen M. Mollick, 63, and Mary Ann Dono, 60, both of New York City.

All of the victims were riding in the car. No one on the ground was hurt.

Rimer said the car drove through a cinderblock retaining wall in the parking deck. Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the accident, which occurred shortly about 12:30 p.m.
