Liberian President Sacks Cabinet
MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) _ President Charles Taylor fired nearly his entire Cabinet Friday when the ministers failed to show up to a national prayer ceremony.
Taylor, who is known for his sometimes hot-tempered decisions, said only the three ministers who went to the religious gathering will remain in their posts.
``God is responsible for our survival,″ said Taylor in a live national radio broadcast. ``Anybody who does not love God will not serve on my Cabinet.″
In the address, Taylor stressed the importance of a three-day ``fast and prayer period″ he had declared a few weeks ago to mourn the deaths of Liberian troops.
Taylor also fired heads of state companies who failed to show at the ceremony to mark the end of the period and promoted on the spot the juniors of the ministers and company chiefs.
Taylor, a warlord in Liberia’s seven-year civil war, has ruled the West African nation since he was elected president in 1997.
