Wheelersburg falls in Ohio Division V semifinals, 32-14
JACKSON, Ohio — Wheelersburg lost its bid to defend its 2017 state championship with a 32-14 defeat by Johnstown-Monroe in the OHSAA Division V state semifinal game Saturday at Jackson High School’s Holzer Field at Alumni Stadium.
The Pirates (12-2) scored three plays into the game on a screen pass from Trent Salyers to Makya Matthews that went 74-yards for the opening score. Then the Johnnies (13-1) rallied for the next 32 unanswered points.
Wheelersburg added a late 5-yard touchdown pass from Salyers to Tanner Holden to cut the lead to 32-14 but was unable to get any closer.
Fullback Luke Myers and halfback Bryce Barasch each scored two touchdowns for the Johnnies as they advanced to next week’s state championship game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
