RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) _ Rick Acton shot a 4-under-par 66 on Tuesday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Senior PGA Tour’s 72 qualifying tournament.

Texas farmer Robert Landers, who lost his tour card after earning only $77,378 in 33 starts as a rookie, was tied for second with Ron Skiles, Mike McCullough and John Jacobs.

Former NFL quarterback John Brodie, the 1991 Ralphs Senior Classic winner, opened with a 69 on the Westin Mission Hills course. Former PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman shot a 71.

The top eight players gain full exemptions for 1996.


ATLANTA (AP) _ East Lake Golf Club, the course Bobby Jones played during his youth, is expected to be the site of the 1998 Tour Championship, the PGA Tour’s season-ending event.

East Lake, which reopened in July after a 14-month, $25 million restoration, also is under consideration to be included in a regular rotation for the Tour Championship, along with the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Tulsa’s Southern Hills and Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported today.


BOSTON (AP) _ Boston Bruins goalie Blaine Lacher, one of the NHL’s top rookies last season, was sent to Providence of the American Hockey League on Tuesday for a conditioning assignment.

Lacher, 25, began the season as Boston’s top goalie but was just 2-5-2 with a 3.93 goals against average. He was not been in uniform for the last five games.


WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ The U.S. Davis Cup team will begin 1996 World Group play against Mexico on Feb. 9-11 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Les Snyder, president of the U.S. Tennis Association, said Tuesday the competition will be played on a hard court in a 5,000-seat arena. The U.S. team faces Russia this weekend in the 1995 final.


BRISBANE, Australia (AP) _ Ukraine’s Evgenia Filonenko and Igor Marchenko won the pairs short program today in the World Junior Figure Skating Championships with an 0.5 mark.

Russia’s Victoria Maksuta and Vladislav Zhovnirksy were second at 1.0 and compatriots Irina Maslennikova and Konstantin Krasnenkov followed at 1.5. The U.S. team of Natalie Vlandis and Jered Guzman was seventh at 3.5.

In the dance competition, France’s Isabelle Delobel and Oliver Schoenfelder maintained their lead after the compulsory section.


SEATTLE (AP) _ Lisa Leslie scored 24 points Tuesday night, leading the USA National Team to a 92-47 victory over Washington.

Sheryl Swoopes added 14 points for Team USA, which improved to 9-0 on its 20-game college tour in preparation for the 1996 Olympics.


ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Walt Disney World Speedway was dedicated Tuesday and officially opened for testing leading up to the inaugural Indy Racing League event on the mile oval.

The Indy 200 will debut Jan. 27 on the three-cornered track with bankings of 10 degrees in Turn 1, 8.5 degrees in Turn 2 and 7 degrees in Turn 3. The midstraight between the first and second turns is 1,022 feet, while the front straight measures 909 feet and backstretch 571 feet.


PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday avoided arbitration with utility infielder Nelson Liriano by agreeing to a two-year contract.

Liriano, 31, made $400,000 in salary and incentives last season while batting .286 with five home runs and 38 RBIs in 107 games.


TOKYO (AP) _ Ajax Amsterdam won its first world club championship since 1972, beating Gremio of Brazil 4-3 on penalty kicks following a scoreless tie Tuesday night in the Intercontinental Cup.

With penalty kicks tied 3-3, Danny Blind beat goalkeeper Murilo, extending Ajax’s unbeaten streak to 66 games.


BOSTON (AP) _ Prizes for the male and female winners of next year’s 100th Boston Marathon will be increased from $75,000 to $100,000.

Race officials said Tuesday that the total purse, excluding bonuses for course and world records, will go from $500,000 to $600,000.


TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana State football coach Dennis Raetz and women’s volleyball coach Jay Potter received two-year contracts Tuesday.

Raetz diretced the Sycamores to a 7-4 mark this season and is 84-93-1 in 16 seasons at the school. Potter was 9-17 in his first season.
