Man, teen die in fiery crash following brief police pursuit
LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a Pennsylvania man fleeing from police and a teenage boy were killed when the car they were in struck a tree in a New Jersey town and burst into flames.
A Toms River police officer started pursuing the vehicle driven by 29-year-old Rynell Bennett shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday because it had been connected to a shooting in Lakewood earlier in the day. The officer soon ended the pursuit due to public safety concerns but continued driving into Lakewood, where he soon found the crashed vehicle in flames.
Bennett, of Bellefonte, and a 16-year-old Gloucester City boy were both pronounced dead at the scene. Two police officers suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at a hospital.
Details about the shooting have not been disclosed.
