Float Kills 6 at Haitian Carnival
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) _ A runaway float barreled into a Haitian carnival crowd early today, killing six people and injuring 39, hospital officials said.
The driver of the float, which carried the popular music group RAM and dozens of fans, apparently lost control toward the end of the carnival procession on Port-au-Prince’s downtown Champs de Mars square.
People in front of and alongside the float were run over about 2:30 a.m.
Officials at the State University Hospital did not identify any of the dead.
It was the second day of the three-day carnival, with dozens of musical groups on floats leading hundreds of thousands of dancing and singing revelers from the seaside city hall to the Champs de Mars, in sight of the presidential palace.
More than 1,500 police officers ensured security. Hospital officials said they have treated about 140 other revelers for minor injuries.
