Western wall? Our border with Mexico west of El Paso is on relatively dry and readily accessible land. A wall (or fence) built on that section of the border would likely be welcomed by most property owners and others living nearby. It could also be a lifesaver for would-be immigrants who would no longer be foolish enough to try coming through the desert to enter the country.Conversely, the section east of El Paso, where the Rio Grande is the border, is a different story. An obstacle to crossers there must be placed well past the north bank of the river, in effect ceding a considerable amount of good land to Mexico (illegally?) while depriving American property owners and other establishments there of any access to the river.A wall is primitive technology and, as history shows time and time again, one that can always be defeated by those determined to do so. But if President Donald Trump must have a border wall to commemorate himself, which appears to be the case, and the Republicans in Congress continue to blindly support him, then can we at least have it limited to the segment west of El Paso?Since a border wall would be a direct benefit to the residents of New Mexico, Arizona and California, perhaps those states would be agreeable to providing the funds that Mexico and Congress won’t.Mel KanninenPay in pesosHere’s a solution to the budget standoff: Give the president his $5.6 billion for a wall in pesos. It’ll look like Mexico is paying for it, and the exchange rate will make the dollar value something Democrats can live with.Thomas W. Hoskings, New BraunfelsSting the top beesIf you are shutting down the government, then shut it all down. Why should the worker bee be affected by this shutdown? This affects Middle America and the fabric of what we stand for: strength, courage and pride.Really, the shutdown should start with the top bees — President Donald Trump, Congress, all staff and everyone who is part of “Big Government” should be the first to relinquish pay, because what are they possibly doing that could render them untouchable? The common government worker should not be held captive just because the top bees want to take it from them. So, Mr. President and Big Government: Relinquish your pay so the worker bees can get theirs!Yvonne TorresCalled qualifiedRe: “Called racist,” Your Turn, Dec. 19:From a practical point of view, if someone wants a certain type of job, they usually understand that they must develop the skills that are required by employers for that position.Area school districts offer adult education classes, such as beginning Spanish and computer literacy, to assist residents wishing to meet certain job requirements. If job seekers are not willing to develop the skills required for a particular position, it is up to them to find a job they are qualified to do. Even then, that does not mean that the job they find will not change its requirements at some point.Martha Confray
