Woman killed on downtown freeway
A woman was struck by a car and killed on the elevated portion of U.S. Highway 59 South near the George R. Brown Convention Center around 3 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3.
According to the authorities, a driver in a small southbound Nissan stopped and called Houston police to report going over a large bump on the highway. The woman told police she was not sure what she had hit. Officers discovered the victim’s body and traffic on the freeway was shut down.
“It’s very unusual for a pedestrian to be on the elevated portion of the freeway and we have no idea what she was doing on the road,” Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson told reporters.
Crowson said police would try to determine whether the victim’s car had broken down and she had tried to cross the highway to seek help.
The road was shut down for several hours while police investigated.
“The driver of the Nissan is not intoxicated and I don’t expect she will be charged,” Crowson said. “But that will be part of the investigation.”
The victim’s identity has not been released.
