Light Plane Lands Safely On Highway
February 1, 1987
ST. ROSE, La. (AP) _ Drivers on a two-lane highway moved over Sunday to allow the landing of a light airplane whose engine broke down, authorities said.
Walter Ingram Leabo landed his single-engine plane safely and taxied onto the shoulder of Airline Highway, three miles short of New Orleans International Airport, said St. Charles Parish sheriff’s spokeswoman Glenda Clement.
Leabo, 47, was unhurt, she said.
″He said (drivers) saw that he was having a problem so the traffic just separated. Both lanes of traffic,″ she said.
Clement said Leabo told her his wheels were down and he was flying at about 1,500 feet Sunday when his engine failed.
