Dolphins Derrick Rodgers Arrested
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Miami Dolphins linebacker Derrick Rodgers was arrested Wednesday and booked for investigation of drunken driving after a Sunset Boulevard confrontation with police officers.
Rodgers was driving a rental car when Hollywood officers pulled him over at 3 a.m. because Dolphins teammate Jason Taylor wasn’t using a seatbelt, Officer Dave Martinez said.
Martinez said Rodgers was ``extremely upset″ and demanded to know why he was stopped.
The officer said he detected the odor of alcohol on Rodgers’ breath, but the Miami player refused to take a field sobriety or breath test and ``continued to walk around in an agitated state,″ Martinez said.
Taylor tried to calm Rodgers but was unsuccessful, he said.
``He (Rodgers) was belligerent and they handcuffed him, put him in the police car and called in a supervisor,″ Martinez said. The supervising sergeant also asked Rodgers to take a field sobriety test and the player again refused, Martinez said.
Rodgers was then taken to the Hollywood police station for a breath test and he was booked for investigation of drunken driving. Taylor later posted $500 bail and Rodgers was ordered to return for arraignment Feb. 18.
Rodgers and Taylor were in Southern California for Sunday’s Super Bowl in San Diego. They left Los Angeles for Miami shortly after bail was posted.
