Pirates Demote Hermansen
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Chad Hermansen, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ opening day center fielder, was demoted to Triple-A Nashville after going 0-for-4 Friday night in a 13-1 victory over St. Louis.
Manager Gene Lamont said Giles will switch from right field, where he played most of last season, to center and John Vander Wal, Bruce Aven and Adrian Brown will see more playing time.
Hermansen had 32 strikeouts in 94 at-bats and, despite being considered the Pirates’ top power-hitting rookie prospect since Barry Bonds in 1986, was hitting only .181 with two homers and eight RBIs.
``I’m going to try to take this as positively as I can and go down there and get straightened out,″ said Hermansen, who had 60 homers in Nashville the last two seasons. ``I had a hundred things going through my head up here, and you can’t play that way.″
Hermansen began the season batting eighth, moved to leadoff before dropping to eighth again only this week.
``He needs to go back down and work things out,″ Lamont said. ``It’s not easy to break in up here, especially when you’re as highly touted as he is. There’s no time table for him to come back, he just needs to go down there and get himself straightened out.″
Hermansen went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Pirates’ 13-1 victory Friday night over St. Louis.
Hermansen was the Pirates’ first-round pick in the 1995 amateur draft.
