High School Teacher Arrested For Poisoning Candy
COEYMANS, (AP) _ A high school teacher allegedly tried to poison his co-workers by injecting a poisonous substance into Hershey’s Kisses and jelly candies, authorities said.
Gary D. Kosowsky, 44, was arrested Thursday and charged with three counts each of reckless endangerment and assault, all felonies, said state Trooper William Keeler.
″It is alleged that Mr. Kosowsky introduced a toxic chemical - mercuric chloride - into approximately 50 pieces of candy ... and then he delivered the canisters containing these candies to fellow teachers and staff,″ Keeler said.
Several teachers at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, about 15 miles south of Albany, became ill last week after eating the candy but escaped serious injury. Uneaten candy was later found and analyzed, the trooper said.
Authorities would not release a motive for the crime.
