Fla. Replaces Fabregas With Castro
MIAMI (AP) _ The Florida Marlins released catcher Jorge Fabregas on Thursday and replaced him with Ramon Castro, who will make his major league debut Friday at Houston.
Fabregas hit .206 with three home runs and 21 RBIs in 82 games. Castro was recalled from Triple-A Calgary, where he hit .258 with 15 homers and 61 RBIs in 97 games.
Castro, 23, is considered a potential everyday catcher next season. He was acquired last year from Houston in a trade that sent reliever Jay Powell to the Astros.
``I want to see Castro,″ manager John Boles said. ``I want to find out if he can be a major league catcher.″
Castro will start the second game of Friday’s doubleheader at the Astrodome.
``We’re starting to look to next year,″ Boles said. ``We’re going to be doing some other things, and this is the start. From now to the end of the season is one big audition.″
Fabregas, a Miami native and a six-year major-league veteran, declined to comment on his release.
``He was shocked, and rightfully so,″ Boles said.
